Me in the nose of
"Aluminum Overcast"
right before we buzzed the field
Ever since I was a kid I've been fascinated
by the aircraft of
the Second World War. This year (1999) I finally found out what it was like to fly
in a couple. I took three extraordinary flights - a T6 Texan and two B-17's.

I flew in the Texan
through North American Top Gun, who offer various
packages in their three Texans. I took a half hour flight which included aerobatics
and a chance to actually fly the plane. That gave me my first entry in my pilot's
log book. I've since begun formal flight training. |

Two weeks later, on
July 4,1999, I took a flight on the Experimental Aircraft
Association's restored B-17G, "Aluminum Overcast". All I can say is
you have to take this flight. Then maybe you'll get an inkling of what the people
who flew these things in WWII experienced. And you'll appreciate the next airline
flight you take! |

My father and I
went to Akron-Canton Airport on August 21, 1999 and flew on the Collings Foundation's B-17
"Nine-O-Nine". The two Collings planes, the B-17 and the B-24 "The
Dragon and His Tail", flew together on a beautiful Saturday evening. What a
sight, to see the B-24 off the port side! |
